Since their inception in 1946, the San Francisco 49ers have worn nothing but red, white and gold.

That’ll change this season.

The 49ers on Thursday unveiled on Twitter the new, black alternate uniforms they’ll debut later this year.

Per NFL rules, San Francisco can wear the new duds for no more than two games this season.

Perhaps a change of clothes will motivate the team in its first season under new head coach Jim Tomsula. After three consecutive trips to the NFC Championship Game — including an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII — the Niners imploded last season, finishing a lackluster 8-8 and missing the playoffs entirely.
