New York Knicks: Injury Update On Point Guard Derrick Rose

New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose has missed three consecutive games with an ankle injury. Will he be available against the Cleveland Cavaliers?

The New York Knicks have played the past three games without starting point guard Derrick Rose. Rose rolled his ankle on Jan. 27 when he came down on Kemba Walker’s foot during the third quarter of New York’s 110-107 victory.

Unfortunately, it appears as though Rose will miss a fourth consecutive game when the Knicks square off against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, Feb. 4.

That’s a disappointing turn of events.

Rose has been active for 43 of the Knicks’ 51 games during the 2016-17 NBA regular season. His ankle injury was a simple case of bad luck and his previous issues were the result of a back injury that was quickly resolved.

Ian Begley of ESPN New York asked Derrick Rose if he would be upset if he had to miss the nationally televised clash with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His answer:

“Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. This is my year. This is when you prove yourself in games like this. I missed a few of these games. But I can’t let it get to me mentally. It’s a part of the plan and I got to listen to my body.”

Rose is clearly frustrated, but it would be irrational to knock him for being responsible.

Rose has an extensive injury history that includes multiple knee surgeries that threatened his career. He’s made an impressive return in 2016-17, but there’s reason to proceed with caution in what’s effectively his first full NBA season since tearing his ACL in 2011-12.

Even in 2015-16, when Rose missed 16 games due to injury, he was forced to wear a protective mask due to an orbital fracture.

Rose missed five of six preseason games in both 2015-16 and 2016-17, but has remained healthy for the better part of the current regular season.

Rose is producing quality numbers with averages of 17.9 points, 4.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 offensive rebounds in 32.1 minutes per game. He’s doing so on 45.5 percent shooting from the field and 86.6 percent shooting from the free throw line.

Rose also ranks No. 3 in the NBA with an average of 8.6 points via drives per game on 53.2 percent shooting.

Though the Knicks would benefit from his return, Rose and the Knicks are in the right to wait until he’s back at 100 percent.
