97 hours to Daytona countdown: Jeff Gordon's remarkable 1997 Daytona 500 victory

Published Feb. 22, 2017 1:19 p.m. ET

The 1997 Daytona 500 was a turning point for Jeff Gordon, crew chief Ray Evernham and the entire No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team.

With team owner Rick Hendrick at home, having been recently diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, the Hendrick squad headed to Daytona with their sights set on victory.

There was a lot at stake for everyone: Gordon had never won a Daytona 500 and despite winning 10 races in 1996, he lost the NASCAR championship to teammate Terry Labonte.

“Refuse To Lose,” which premieres Thursday night on FS1 after the Duel at Daytona, chronicles the remarkable run of the No. 24 team in the ’97 Daytona 500. Features lots of never before seen footage and insights from the key players who made it happen.

Check it out on FS1 following Thursday night’s races.
