Michigan State Football: Three players dismissed amid sexual assault case

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 2:19 a.m. ET

Three Michigan State football players have been dismissed from the team amid sexual assault charges.

Michigan State football has been waiting for word from the Ingham County Prosector's office for about five months now. After an alleged incident back in January involving three players, Mark Dantonio and the Spartans were waiting for the process to play out before making a decision.

The positive news for the program, though, in all of this is that an external investigation found that Dantonio did not try to cover anything up and followed the correct steps to introduce the potential sexual assault to law enforcement. However, that can't change what may have happened to the alleged victim.

On Tuesday, the defendants' names were released to the public after months of silence. Josh King, Donnie Corley and Demetric Vance were all listed as the three being charged for sexual assault.

It's been a tough offseason for the Spartans, but Dantonio took the correct steps by waiting for the word on charges and then delivering a swift punishment, dismissed the three players.

On Monday, the prosecutor's office revealed that it would be seeking charges and that despite the ruling, all three players should be innocent until proven guilty. No matter how you feel about this situation, the three deserve due process and will get that until the final ruling.

Michigan State now has three potential starters to replace for 2017, but that's the least of the Spartans worries. The program can now move forward and the players who are remaining will have an opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others.
