Game recap: Wade Miley gave up three singles and an unearned run in five innings, and he got some bad swings on changeups and sliders along the way. Shortstop Didi Gregorius committed a fielding error when he mishandled a grounder after his foot got caught in the dirt with two outs and a runner on third base in the fifth inning, enabling the A’s to score their first run. Daric Barton singled in the final run in the eighth inning as the D-backs were shut out for the second time this spring.
Hitting notes: All five of the D-backs’ hits were singles. Gerardo Parra, Henry Blanco and Nick Evans, playing for Paul Goldschmidt at first base, were the only starters to get a hit. Cliff Pennington lined a sharp single through the middle in the ninth.
Pitching notes: Wade Miley gave struck out four, the biggest coming when he got Jed Lowrie on a slider with runners on first and third and catcher Henry Blanco threw out Billy Burns attempting to steal second to end the inning. "Threw a couple more changeups today. It was a good pitch for me," Miley said. "Keep making progress. Obviously we’re ahead of where we’ve been in the past, but I personally like it better. Rather than throw one or two innings, you can get into a groove." … Brad Ziegler induced another double play in his lone inning, getting Yoenis Cespedes in the sixth inning.
Short hops: Goldschmidt missed a second straight game with leg stiffness, but he is expected to play in one of the split-squad games Saturday, Gibson said. The D-backs are not concerned. "He’s been working out and he feels good," Gibson said. … Instant replay will be used in the D-backs split-squad game at Tempe Diablo Stadium, so Gibson plans to attend that game. … Brandon McCarthy is on track to make about 75 pitches in his third spring start Saturday. Bradley probably will be limited to 50 or so, since it is only his second appearance.
