Avalanche hire new assistant GM amidst administrative shake-up

There will be plenty of new faces managing the Avalanche next season.

The team announced Monday that defensive coach Andre Tourigney, and film coach Mario Duhamel have left the team to pursue other coaching jobs. Tourigney resigned from the team in hopes of landing a head coaching job, and Duhamel has been granted permission to speak with other teams about a potential position that would put him back behind the bench.

On the plus-side, the Avs announced the hiring of their new assistant GM John MacFarland, the former assistant GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets. MacFarland is rumored to become, “Sakic’s ‘right hand man’” according to Blue Jackets’ writer Aaron Portzline due to his proficiency in dealing with all hockey-related matters during his time with Columbus.

It hasn’t been announced precisely what role(s) MacFarland will fulfill, but “…His reputation in AHL circles [is] absolutely sterling” according to Portzline of Mile High Sticking, and that bodes well for the future of the Avalanche franchise.
