Pelicans officially sign Anthony Davis' new mentor, Kendrick Perkins

He's bringing championship experience and the best scowl in the NBA, and he's coming to help Anthony Davis become the world-destroying leviathan he's well on his way to being. The New Orleans Pelicans officially announced on Tuesday that they had signed free agent center Kendrick Perkins.

The deal was originally reported by ESPN.com's Marc Stein, who reports that the deal is for one year at the veteran's minimum.

Perkins won't play much, although reports that Pelicans center Omer Asik is suffering from back spasms could mean Perkins is pressed into duty if the back problems linger. But according to ESPN.com's Royce Young, the Pelicans signed Perkins to mentor Davis. Perkins learned from the best in Kevin Garnett, and any lessons he can impart from KG to Davis will be well worth the minimum contract he signed.

And while he's known to fans around the league for his permanent scowl, Perkins is known inside the NBA as a constantly positive locker room presence. If anything, he'll be there to encourage Davis every step of the way and remind him that he's the best player in the world. It might be a little early for such accolades, but that won't stop Perkins.
