Padres groundskeeper climbs up net to retrieve Upton's broken bat (VIDEO)
San Diego Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. broke up Giants rookie Chris Heston's no-hitter in the sixth inning Tuesday at Petco Park, but that was hardly what fans at Petco Park were focused on after the hit.
Jammed by Heston, who threw a no-hitter earlier in the season, Upton broke his bat on the blooper into shallow center field that broke up Heston's hitless outing -- a game the Giants would win 9-3 as Heston moved to 10-5 on the season.
Upton's bat flew back into the net behind home plate on the hit, and became lodged high up in the net.
The Padres grounds crew tried to dislodge the bat with a rake, but it wouldn't budge.
Enter Jeff "Spiderman" Brokaw, who climbed up the netting and grabbed the bat himself.
"I've never had to do anything like that before," Brokaw said in an in-game interview after the incident. "All the eyes were on me. People were yelling at me in the stands to climb up the net. I didn't know if that was the right move; I kind of thought I was going to get in trouble for doing that."
