Wayne Rooney confirms he will stay at Manchester United despite China rumors

Wayne Rooney is staying at Manchester United. The player released a statement confirming that he will not leave Old Trafford and acknowledging that he's had interest from clubs, a move that comes after days of speculation of his moving to China.

“Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Man United,” Rooney said. “I hope I’ll play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts. It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.”

China is an obvious landing spot for Rooney, whenever he leaves Manchester United. They have thrown around a ton of money and would undoubtedly pay the striker handsomely. Manchester United is also massive in China, making him a marketing golden boy for whatever club there could sign him.

The transfer window for the Chinese Super League doesn't close until February 26 so Rooney (or any other player) could still sign there. With reports that Rooney's agent was in China, there was talk that maybe Rooney would make the move abroad now, but he's made it clear in his statement that he will finish out the season at Old Trafford.

Rooney has played a limited role for the Red Devils of late due to injury, but is pretty clearly second choice even when fit. That said, he does play a role in the team and with Manchester United fighting for a top four spot, as well as alive in the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League, there won't be a shortage of opportunities for him.
