Watch Julian Green become the first American to score for Bayern Munich

It had been ten months since Julian Green last started a competitive match for Bayern Munich, but on Wednesday the U.S. international finally got his chance – and made the most of it.

Green scored his first competitive senior team goal of his club career in Bayern’s German Cup match against Augsburg, doubling the defending champions’ lead in the first half:

Green has featured prominently and scored several goals in each of the past two preseasons for Bayern, but he’s rarely gotten a shot to prove himself in a match that counted. Green’s last start for Bayern came in December against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, and he hasn’t seen the field at all since a 24-minute cameo at the end of Bayern’s 1st Round cup match against Carl-Zeiss Jena in August.

But after scoring two goals for the U.S. national team in their last two World Cup qualifiers and impressing Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti in training, the 21-year-old was called upon to give star striker Robert Lewandowski a rare breather. Green delivered by making history -- becoming the first American to score a goal for Bayern Munich.

No, Green won’t suddenly challenge Lewandowski for consistent playing time after this. He’s still likely to make less appearances for Bayern than you can count on two hands. But for someone who was a doubt to even make Bayern’s roster this season, after three years of mostly treading water with the reserves’ team or going out on loan, this moment was a special one.
