Justin Rose wins the first Olympic gold medal in 112 years

Golf has its first Olympic champion in more than a century in Justin Rose, who captured gold for Great Britain during Sunday's final round in Rio.

Rose, who was tied with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson at 15 under heading into the final hole, birdied on 18 to finish with a score of 16 under, narrowly beating his Ryder Cup partner, who took home the silver medal.

American Matt Kuchar finished at 13 under to take the bronze medal.

Kuchar spoke with NBC about his Olympic experience at the end of the tournament.

“I can’t explain the pride to you that’s just busting out of my chest... to make an Olympics and medal is just amazing.”

Prior to the Rio games, golf had not been an Olympic sport since 1904, when Canadian George Lyon took home the gold for Canada in the St. Louis Summer Games.
