MINNEAPOLIS — Clete Thomas is back with the Minnesota Twins, as the team announced Monday that he has been recalled from Triple-A Rochester.
To make room for Thomas on the 40-man roster, Minnesota designated reliever Tyler Robertson for assignment. Robertson was on the Opening Day roster but was optioned to Rochester on April 6.
Thomas, a 29-year-old outfielder, first debuted with the Twins last year when Minnesota claimed him off waivers in April of last season. In his first game on April 15 with the Twins, Thomas homered and drove in two runs. He wound up batting just .143 in 12 games and was eventually sent to Triple-A.
In 35 games for Rochester this year, Thomas was batting .296 with nine homers and 25 RBI. But he has also shown a penchant for striking out — 35 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 143 plate appearances.
Minnesota optioned Chris Colabello following Sunday’s game against Seattle, so Thomas takes his spot on the 25-man roster. The Twins are off Monday before beginning a three-game series Tuesday in Kansas City.
