Steelers release QB Tajh Boyd

The Steelers have parted ways with quarterback Tajh Boyd, the team announced Tuesday.

Boyd was hoping to challenge Landry Jones for Pittsburgh's third spot on the depth chart, but he didn't get a snap in the team's two preseason games. Boyd, who played in a spread offense at Clemson, had issues handling snaps under center and struggled in his command of the offense, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com:

"Boyd had several fumbles on the quarterback-center exchange early in training camp, and coaches absolutely hate that. He has not shown them the command of the huddle that’s required of a quarterback in game situations. Both Landry Jones and Tyler Murphy would play quarterback in a preseason game before Boyd at this stage."

Jones has gotten virtually all of the work in the preseason aside from Ben Roethlisberger's opening series in Jacksonville last Friday. Jones is 39-of-78 for 328 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Steelers apparently feel comfortable enough with what they've seen from Jones to let Boyd go. Bruce Gradkowski's return from the physically unable to perform list this week solidifies the depth chart behind Roethlisberger.

In a corresponding roster move, the Steelers signed receiver Jarrod West. Pittsburgh also reached an injury settlement with running back Cameron Stingily, who is now a free agent.
