Green Bay Packers fans already know about Geronimo Allison?

The Packers, filling a hole in their wide receiver group, have brought up Geronimo Allison from their practice squad. Allison is taking place of WR Jared Abbrederis who was placed on the IR this week with a quadricep injury.

So now we know his name, what should we expect from him?

Allison was an undrafted free agent signing last spring. His last two years of football were played at the University of Illinois.

While in Champaign, Allison caught eight touchdowns and pulled in 106 balls for 1,480 yards. He was voted honorable mention on the All Big Ten Team at the end of his senior year when he caught 65 passes for 882 yards.

Yet that was not enough to get him selected in May’s NFL Draft.

After being overlooked by all 32 teams during the draft the Packers thought enough of him to offer him a chance to make the team. Allison took advantage of his opportunity this past preseason to get the attention of the Packers coaching staff.

With his time this year, Allison made plays. He ended with many noteworthy moments but the highlight was the 51-yard reception against the 49ers during the third game of the preseason.

Geronimo has an ideal WR frame. Tall and lanky, he is 6-foot, three inches and is listed at 202 pounds. When most NFL DBs are around 5-10 to six-foot, the extra few inches could make for a big advantage for Allison. He plays an aggressive style, but he isn’t the fastest guy out there. His gifts are his ability to go up and get the ball with his long and tall frame.

Allison ran a 4.67 in his 40 during the NFL Combine. His vertical jump was 33 inches. He was noted to having foot quickness, the ability to catches the ball at full extension and is an above average blocker.

The knocks on him were his lack of deep speed, drops and his lack of separation.

So, what should we expect from him?

We will not see much of Allison during most offensive sets but I bet we will get to see him on special teams. Here is where he will have to get the coaching staffs’ attention again. If he can show something to his coaches then maybe he will earn some time in the offense.

SO, don’t expect him to jump in and play a lot, especially in Atlanta next Sunday but you can bet if given the chance, Geronimo will try to prove that he has something to offer as a wide receiver.
