A source told FOX Sports the deal is for the veteran-minimum base salary of $715,000.
Hillis, entering his sixth season in the league, has played 65 games with 33 starts. He has 2,470 yards on 597 carries and 867 yards on 111 catches.
Hillis was a seventh-round pick, 227th overall, of the Denver Broncos in 2008. His best season came with the Cleveland Browns in 2010, his first of two campaigns with the team, when he had 1,177 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns on 270 carries. He played 13 games for the Kansas City Chiefs last season and had 309 yards on 85 carries.
Hillis, who worked out with the team Tuesday, adds depth at running back behind starter Doug Martin. The No. 2 spot appears somewhat unsettled entering training camp Thursday. Miami product Mike James was drafted in the sixth round, 189th overall. Brian Leonard, a seventh-year player who spent four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, also could compete for the role.
The team also announced the waiving of running back Matt Brown.
