There have been many good trends lately in uniform design. Teams are getting smarter about jerseys for the most part, but at the same time there is a safeness in a lot of the team's current looks. No one wants to be made fun of, so everyone kind of settles for the same ideas. White jersey, clean font. Logo, team name, not much else.
This creates a lot of fine uniforms, but not a lot of great uniforms. For those, you have to look to the past. Here are 21 teams who have a throwback jersey that is better than their current one.

Look at that red piping on the throwback. You can almost feel Dominique Wilkins throwing down a two-hander in some guy's face. That jersey is gorgeous.
The Coyotes had one of the most beautiful jerseys in sports, a funky art deco logo that paid homage to the southwest. Now they wear maroon and have a boring coyote howling. Go back!
The new Raptors jersey is good. The new Raptors jersey is fine. But look at the old one! It has a dribbling velociraptor. IT HAS A DRIBBLING VELOCIRAPTOR.
Yes, the current Steelers jersey is clean and a classic in its own right. But now that every other team in the league has a jersey that looks like that, why not go back to the bumblebee? It's beautiful, the colors work and it'll be an iconic look at a time when few teams have them.
Arizona has sinned twice on this list. Replacing the glorious pinstripes and funky "A" with an instantly forgettable jersey that no one should like. Take it back to the Luis Gonzalez era, D-Backs.
Look at the current Mavericks jersey. Look away. Can you remember any single thing about it? It's white. It has some letters. There's some blue, uh, somewhere. Then look at that throwback. The green! The blue! The saloon lettering! That tells a story. That's a Dallas jersey right there.
Los Angeles Rams
If you're going to copy the iconic helmet design for the new uniform, why not just go all the way and get some bold colors instead of the tepid blue and dark gold you have now?
Los Angeles Clippers
The insane font on the Clippers throwback may be insane, but it's memorable. Look at the current Clippers jersey. Isn't that the same jersey as the Mavericks one, with just some lines underneath the team name? Also, get ready for a run of baby blue uniforms, an amazing past trend that we've gone away from for some reason.
St. Louis Cardinals
There it is again. It's hard to hate on the Cardinals' current jersey because it's a classic and they haven't messed with it. But that blue. It's beautiful -- especially offset by the red and the yellow of the bat.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
This one I'm not even sure what the Bucs are doing. I've never met a single person who prefers the new look to the iconic creamsicle jerseys. The new look is hideous, all bad, bland colors that have no business being together. And that creamsicle is perfect in every way. Just re-brand the old way and be done with it, Tampa Bay. No one will fight you on this.
Detroit Red Wings
Like the St. Louis Cardinals, it's hard to hate on the Red Wings' current jerseys because they're just about perfect. But god do I love the lettering on those throwbacks, and that off-white with the red and the tie-down sweater is hard to beat. These are both A+, but man, do I love that throwback.
The A's haven't messed too much with their branding over the years, but I'd still love them to bring back these 80s lemon-lime masterpieces.
Another team that looks infinitely better in the baby blue. The current Kings jerseys, with that awful block lettering and weird gray-purple combination, are just bad. Go to the robin's egg and don't think twice about it.
San Diego Chargers
Listen, I know it's ridiculous that I keep advocating teams go back to the powder blue, but until one team does it, I'm going to keep advocating for it to be done.
Houston took a bold, beautiful jersey that has aged magnificently and replaced it with one of the most boring jerseys in Major League Baseball. Channel Nolan Ryan and make these your primary jerseys this year, Houston.
New England Patriots
I know the Patriots probably don't want to mess with success, and the new look has been good to them, but once Tom Brady retires, it's time to go back to Pat Patriot and the red.
I don't even feel the need to explain this one. Stop screwing with us, Anaheim. You're making us all mad.
Los Angeles Angels
There is nothing wrong with the Angels current uniforms, but man, I miss those blue hats and that beautiful lettering.
The Miami Dolphins' current jersey is clearly trying to be exactly like their iconic one, with just enough changes to annoy me. Why not just go back to it? What is the point of this?
Creamsicle and powder blue: Bring. Them. Back. I'm not saying every team needs to do it. But please, some teams, just embrace these beautiful colors. Every single team in the four major American sports right now wears either maroon, dark blue, green or purple, white, or black. Embrace the pastels! Let's go!
