Did Tuukka Rask just break Shawn Thornton retirement news?

Published Aug. 18, 2015 3:29 p.m. ET

Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask is responsible for keeping pucks out of the net, but he is not tasked with keeping retirement plans secret. Perhaps that's why he spilled the beans on a possible retirement timeline for former Bruin and current Florida Panther Shawn Thornton.

Rask made an appearance on WEEI radio in Boston Tuesday as party of the station's Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon, and he let Thornton's secret slip after a question about how much Thornton and Rask are able to see each other since Thornton left town.

The pair were spotted at a Zac Brown Band concert earlier this month and also participate in charity events together, but Rask said he hopes to see more of Thornton soon.

"He’s retiring after this year I believe so maybe we’ll do something after that," Rask said on-air.

Thornton has yet to announce a retirement date, so Rask's statement was a bit of a surprise to the general public. But the 38-year-old forward's contract does expire at the end of the 2015-16 season, so retirement next spring would make sense.

It seems that, barring any more secret-spilling from Rask, fans will just have to wait and see.
