Former Vikings owner willing to buy into Raiders to move them to Texas (VIDEO)
News of the Oakland Raiders' visit to San Antonio to discuss a potential move with city officials broke last month, but details of the visit have been rather scant.
Not anymore.
Texas billionaire Red McCombs, who owned the Minnesota Vikings for six years and who met with Raiders owner Mark Davis during July’s meeting, spoke with the San Antonio Express-News on Wednesday about the meeting.
Then he offered up a rather eye-opening proposition to help make the move happen.
“I don't think it could have gone better,” McCombs to the Express-News of his 90-minute meeting with Davis.
McCombs added that he believed the city left a favorable impression with Davis, and that he believed the trip was a sincere effort by Davis to explore possibilities, and not a play for more leverage for a new stadium in Oakland.
"It's a myth that San Antonio is a bargaining chip," McCombs told the paper. The Raiders' lease with Oakland to play in the O.co Coliseum expires in 2015.
Then came the proposition.
Noting that Davis may have a hard time drumming up money from San Antonio-area investors to help facilitate the move, McCombs said that his family would be willing to buy into the club "if that's what it would take to get them here."
Among other officials who met with Davis was former San Antonio mayor Henry Cisneros, whose son-in-law is former Raiders OL Brad Badger. Badger now works in the team's front office.
McCombs, who has also owned the San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets, ultimately acknowledged the chances of the Raiders moving to Texas are remote, but he isn't going to give up without a fight.
"For a guy to pick up and move from a place he's been as long as he's been there, that takes a lot," McCombs to the Express-News of Davis. "It may not happen. But you got to be in the game, you've got to give yourself a chance, and that's what [Cisneros is] doing."
