James Paxton to miss time with strained tendon in finger

Published May. 30, 2015 1:21 p.m. ET

Seattle Mariners left-handed starter James Paxton left his start early on Thursday with a 'twinge' in his finger, and that turned out to be worthy of a stint on the disabled list.

That was the word on Friday, when the club placed him on the 15-day D.L. with a diagnosis of a strained tendon in his middle finger (via Bob Dutton of the News Tribune).

The team is preparing itself for a potentially 'extended absence', according to Dutton, and manager Lloyd McClendon took the opportunity to put this development into context: “It’s a tough loss, obviously. To think we’ve lost our No. 2 and No. 3 starters, that’s tough. But in this game, nobody feels sorry for you. You have to make the adjustments. You have to take the stand that the next man up, let's go. We just have to figure out who the next man is."

With right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma still working his way back from his own injury, the Mariners might have to get creative to fill out a rotation behind Felix Hernandez and young right-hander Taijuan Walker, who pitched well on Friday night.

To fill Paxton's place on the 25-man roster, the Mariners recalled reliever Dominic Leone on Friday.
