Furcal's father dies after injury

Published Jun. 20, 2010 9:57 p.m. ET

The father of Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal has died from injuries he sustained after being kicked by a horse three weeks ago.

Furcal said his father, Silvino, died Sunday morning in his Caribbean homeland after complications from surgery.

In a phone interview with The Associated Press from the Dominican Republic, Furcal described his late father as his hitting coach and No. 1 fan.

Furcal is batting .302 since his return from a strained left hamstring on May 25. He had five hits in a 12-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre said Sunday in Boston that he expects Furcal back in the middle of the week. The team put Furcal on the bereavement list last Thursday so he could be with his father.
