Martellus Bennett explains the funny way he’s trying to cozy up to Aaron Rodgers
Martellus Bennett has been in the NFL long enough to know having a good relationship with his quarterback is critical for a player whose success is measured by receptions. So Bennett, who signed a three-year, $21 million contract in March with the Packers, is already hard at work trying to get to know Aaron Rodgers.
But of course Bennett is going about this in his own unique way.
"I send a lot of emojis and GIFs and stuff like that to him,” Bennett told the Wisconsin State Journal. “Other than that, it’s just conversations. That’s pretty much it. I tell him things like, 'I like chocolate chip cookies. What kind of cookie do you like?' I just tell him little things. Like, 'Hey, look my daughter did this today. She's jumping, or she learned to use the potty.' Stuff like that.
"It’s just conversation, making friends."
Remember, this is the same Martellus Bennett who polled fans on what number he should wear with the Packers and hilariously danced with Patriots cheerleaders after New England’s AFC title victory in January. So Bennett sending emojis and talking about potty training with his new quarterback isn't too surprising for the lighthearted tight end.
But Bennett also made sure to get down to business with his star QB.
"I'm always talking to him on the field, too, trying to see what he wants," Bennett said. "(I'll say), 'Hey, how did that look?' or he'll give me the thumbs up. Or if I’m in another group, I always look back at him, 'Hey, is that what you want? Is there something different you want on this?'
"Always trying to figure out, just trying to have those conversations on and off the field, trying to get know each other as players, and as people."
Bennett has some experience meshing with an elite quarterback after spending last year with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, hauling in 55 passes for 701 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns.
