Bears send RB Rodgers to IR, sign Antone Smith as replacement

The Chicago Bears had to replace a running back on the roster this week.

Third-down specialist Jacquizz Rodgers broke his arm against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 5, so the team placed him on season-ending injured reserve. The Bears signed another former Falcon, Antone Smith, to replace Rodgers.

Rodgers was a modest contributor for the Bears through the first five games of the season. He carried the ball only 14 times for 41 yards, while also adding one reception for 10 yards.

Smith, 30, played five seasons in Atlanta (2010-2014), four of which were with Rodgers. The Falcons primarily used him on special teams, but he did get a little involved on offense each of the past two seasons. The former undrafted rookie has 29 career rushing attempts for 286 yards and four touchdowns, as well as 13 career receptions for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith will take some time to adjust to his new home. In the meantime, this development could open the door for fourth-round rookie Jeremy Langford to see more action.
