Yankees' Brendan Ryan will miss at least the first month of season

New York Yankees backup shortstop Brendan Ryan will be out into at least May because of a strained right calf.

Ryan was hurt going after a grounder up the middle in Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay. He was using one crutch when he walked into the clubhouse before Thursday's home split-squad game against Pittsburgh.

''Not good physically and spiritually,'' Ryan said. ''Pretty bummed out.''

Ryan was playing Wednesday in place of starting shortstop Didi Gregorius, who sprained his left wrist diving for a grounder Saturday.

Gregorius was in the starting lineup for a spilt-squad game Thursday against Detroit in Lakeland.

Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran was scratched from the starting lineup against the Pirates because of a stomach virus. Beltran had been scheduled to be the designated hitter and was replaced by Austin Romine.
