Twins sign Doumit to one-year deal

The Minnesota Twins have signed Ryan Doumit to a one-year contract, Doumit’s agent announced on Twitter.
Doumit, 30, is primarily a catcher but gives the Twins insurance at first base and right field. His positional flexibility is particularly important, in light of the injury questions surrounding Minnesota’s biggest stars, catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau.
Doumit is coming off an injury-shortened season himself. He was limited to 77 games with the Pirates this year because of a fractured left ankle sustained in a home-plate collision with the Cubs’ Carlos Peña on May 29. But Doumit was an impact hitter while healthy, totaling an .830 OPS with eight home runs and 30 RBI.
The Twins need run production from the switch-hitting Doumit. Third baseman Danny Valencia is the only returning Minnesota hitter who finished the season with more than 35 RBI.
