Twins bring lefty Mahay up for bullpen

Published Apr. 15, 2010 12:21 a.m. ET

The Minnesota Twins purchased the contract of left-handed reliever Ron Mahay on Wednesday.

Mahay signed with the Twins late in spring training and was pitching for Class A Fort Myers. He threw well for the Twins down the stretch last season after they signed him in late August.

The Twins wanted to add another lefty to the bullpen with Jose Mijares struggling to start the season. Rookie right-hander Alex Burnett was optioned to Triple-A Rochester to make room for Mahay.

Burnett was somewhat of a surprise to make the opening day roster, but he impressed the team with 2 1-3 scoreless innings in his first major league stint.

``Looks like he's going to be a good one for us,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said.
