Trumbo admits he's been 'trying too hard' in first week with Mariners
Mark Trumbo picked up two hits in his first game with the Seattle Mariners last week, but followed up his debut with an 0-16 stretch over the next four games.
Before Seattle's series finale in Cleveland on Thursday afternoon, Trumbo admitted to Matt Pentz of the Seattle Times that he's been 'pressing' a bit at the plate.
Said Trumbo: "You don’t try to do that (press), but it’s just one of the things that happens. In a perfect world you wouldn’t, but this isn’t a perfect world. Trying too hard has kind of been the theme of the first week.”
Pentz notes that Trumbo has been making more solid contact since joining the Mariners, even if the hits aren't falling yet.
With Seattle starved for offensive consistency outside of slugger Nelson Cruz, an offensive turnaround for Trumbo (or even having just a few balls fall for base hits) would help.
