GREENVILLE, NC — East Carolina pitcher and top draft prospect Jeff Hoffman will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right arm next week.

The school says Dr. James Andrews will perform the elbow ligament replacement procedure on Hoffman, a junior who had missed his last two starts because of arm soreness.

Hoffman is ranked as the No. 5 prospect by Baseball America for the June draft.

Hoffman (3-3) had a 2.94 ERA in 10 starts and ranked fifth in Conference USA with 72 strikeouts. The Latham, NY, native had a season-high 16 strikeouts against Middle Tennessee and 14 strikeouts against Western Kentucky.
