Teixeira out with toe, thumb injuries

Published Sep. 18, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

First baseman Mark Teixeira is out of the Yankees starting lineup because of thumb and toe injuries.

Teixeira's been playing on a broken small right toe since being hit by a pitch of Oakland's Vin Mazzaro on Aug. 31.

But a deep bone bruise in his right thumb has made swinging from both sides of the plate increasingly difficult for the switch-hitting Teixeira, who's batting .259 with 33 homers and 101 RBI this year.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi informed Teixeira on Friday night he would have the day off Saturday night against the Orioles.

Lance Berkman started at first base for the Yankees, who began play Saturday in first place in the AL East, a half-game ahead of Tampa Bay.
