Sources: Tigers' Washburn battling sore knee

Jarrod Washburn has struggled since coming to Detroit in a July 31 trade.

And there may be a reason for that.

The left-hander is pitching with soreness in his right knee, two sources said Tuesday, but the team doesn't have any immediate plans to drop him from the rotation.

Washburn, 35, was scratched from a start for the Mariners earlier this season because of tightness in his left knee.

Washburn is now receiving treatment on his right knee but hasn't said anything publicly about the injury. He is 1-2 with a 6.81 ERA in six starts since arriving from Seattle at the nonwaiver trade deadline.

"I'm sure, at this point, that he's disappointed that he hasn't done better," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday, when asked to assess Washburn's performance to date. "But that's already history. We'll look forward to his next start."
