Sources: Mets keep stars for 2013

The New York Mets have formally exercised their 2013 contract options on David Wright and R.A. Dickey, major league sources told FOXSports.com on Tuesday.

Wright’s option is worth $16 million. Dickey’s will be $5 million or more based on award bonuses. Wright and Dickey are the Mets’ top position player and pitcher, respectively, and sources say the team remains engaged with both in discussions about long-term contracts.

At this moment, both are eligible for free agency after the coming season. Wright is coming off his best year since at least 2008, and re-signing him for the long term is viewed as essential if the Mets want to remain relevant and competitive. The knuckleballing Dickey was one of the best stories in baseball this year and could win the National League Cy Young Award, after going 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA.
