Right-hander Ben Sheets has been placed on the disabled list because of an injury to the elbow that required surgery in 2009 and forced him to miss that entire season.
Sheets had been pitching better over his last four starts, going 2-2 with an ERA of 3.38. The two-time all-star was put on the DL for the seventh time in his career. He has a strained right elbow.
Left-hander Cedrick Bowers was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday to take Sheets' place on the roster.
A's left-hander Dallas Braden, who came off the disabled list Monday, will start Sunday in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox.
