Royals sign 6 to minor league contracts

Published Nov. 24, 2013 2:19 a.m. ET

The Royals have signed six players to minor league contracts, including right-hander P.J. Walters, who made eight starts for the rival Minnesota Twins last season.

Kansas City will announce big league spring training invites at a later date.

Also signed to minor league deals on Saturday were third baseman Brandon Laird, who's had major league stints each of the last three season; outfielders Gorkys Hernandez, Paulo Orlando and Edinson Rincon; and right-hander Wilking Rodriguez, who was limited last season by a shoulder injury.

The 28-year-old Walters could provide some depth for the Royals after going 2-5 with a 5.95 ERA last season. But he'll be a long shot to make the staff out of spring training.
