Rosenthal: Astros interview Red Sox bench coach for manager role

Published Sep. 26, 2014 12:22 p.m. ET

The Houston Astros have interviewed Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo for its managerial opening, FOX Sports 1 Insider Ken Rosenthal reported. The Astros fired Bo Porter earlier this month.

Lovullo, who has been the Red Sox's bench coach the past two seasons, was interviewed in person in Boston this past Monday during a Red Sox off day, Rosenthal noted. The Astros, who enter the weekend at 69-90, have not had a winning season since 2008.

Lovullo served as the Blue Jays' first-base coach under manager John Farrell in 2011-12, and was the manager for Class AAA Pawtucket, a Boston farm team. Lovullo's managerial experience in the minors goes beyond that, as he also managed in the Cleveland farm system from 2002-09.

Fun fact on Lovullo: His father was a producer for the TV show "Hee Haw."
