Rockies put C Hernandez on DL

The Rockies put catcher Ramon Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained left hand that has bothered him for several days and made it difficult to grip a bat tightly.

Colorado called up catcher Wil Nieves from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take his spot. They also transferred infielder Hector Gomez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL with a strained groin.

Hernandez batted .215 with four homers and 15 RBI in 27 games. He went on the DL before the start of a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds, his former team.

The 34-year-old Nieves is playing for his fifth major league team, along with the Padres, Yankees, Nationals and Brewers. He batted .299 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 28 games at Triple-A.
