Right-hander Johnson agrees to $1M deal to stay with Padres

Former All-Star pitcher Josh Johnson is staying with the San Diego Padres after missing the 2014 season, finalizing a $1 million, one-year contract that allows him to earn an additional $6.25 million in bonuses based on starts.

The 30-year-old right-hander agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract with the Padres in November 2013 but got hurt during spring training and had elbow ligament-replacement surgery on April 24.

Johnson, who turns 31 on Jan. 31, is 58-45 with a 3.40 ERA in 160 starts and 10 relief appearances for the Marlins (2005-12) and Toronto (2013). He was an All-Star in 2009 and '10.

Johnson can earn $500,000 for five starts, $1 million for 10, $500,000 for 15 and $1 million for 20. He would earn $250,000 per start from 21 through 33.

To clear a roster spot Wednesday, the Padres designated infielder-outfielder Jake Goebbert for assignment.
