Report: Yanks won't pay Cano $300M

The last few weeks for Robinson Cano have been interesting to say the least.

First, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported in September that the free agent asked the Yankees for a $300 million contract during the season. Then we found out in early October he may need that money to deal with claims he's a deadbeat dad. But on Tuesday, the Yankees' owner spoke, and it sounds like the free-agent second baseman may be in for a long winter.

Speaking on ESPN 98.7's "The Michael Kay Show" in New York, Hal Steinbrenner said, when asked about any proposed deal of 10 years and $300 million, “I don’t feel this organization is ready to do something like that.”

Then he expanded a little more, hinting that Cano may have to choose between the biggest contract offer and remaining a Yankee — that he won't be able to get both.

“No, I do not. We’ll see. I know that is a number that is out there now. We’ll see if he gets it, how much he wants to be in New York," Steinbrenner said. "But, again, I can promise it is going to be a very, very solid offer that we do make because we are going to try. We are going to try the best we can to keep him.”

Cano, who turns 31 later this month, is coming off another solid season. He hit .314 with an .899 OPS in 2013, hitting 27 home runs, driving in 107 runs and scoring 81 more. While it was his first season under 100 runs since 2008, he was the only consistent bat in the Pinstripers' lineup all season, playing 160 games and helping New York stay in the playoff race to the season's final week despite injuries keeping many of the Yankees' biggest names out of the lineup for prolonged periods of time, including Mark Teixeira (147 games missed), Derek Jeter (145), Curtis Granderson (116) and Alex Rodriguez (135).

On Wednesday, the Yankees announced they signed manager Joe Girardi to a four-year extension.
