Report: Guillen subject of drug probe

Published Oct. 28, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

San Francisco Giants outfielder Jose Guillen was left off the team’s postseason roster shortly after federal authorities informed Major League Baseball that he was tied to an investigation into shipments of performance-enhancing drugs, The New York Times reported.

The Giants acquired Guillen from the Kansas City Royals in mid-August, but when it came time to set the playoff roster, Aaron Rowand was named instead.

Citing "several lawyers briefed on the matter," The Times said that just days before the postseason began, federal authorities told MLB officials they were investigating shipments of human growth hormone that were sent to Guillen’s wife.

Commissioner Bud Selig's office began its own investigation and advised the Giants that they should consider leaving Guillen off the postseason roster, The Times said.

An MLB spokesman declined comment, The Times said.

Guillen, 34, has been tied to performance-enhancing drugs before. In 2007, The San Francisco Chronicle reported that between May 2002 and June 2005 Guillen bought more than $19,000 worth of HGH and other drugs from the Palm Beach Rejuvenation Center

Federal authorities in the Bay Area — including agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration — are investigating the shipments, and it was unclear whether other major league players received similar shipments, The Times said.

Guillen, a 14-year veteran, played in 42 games for the Giants, hitting .266 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs. He is in the final season of a three-year $36 million contract .
