Remembering Wood's historic performance

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:37 p.m. ET

Just as his career was getting started, Kerry Wood etched his name into the record books.

Seventeen years ago, on May 6, 1998, Wood electrified the Wrigley crowd as he struck out 20 batters in a game against the Houston Astros.

Not only was that May afternoon a special one, but it turned out the entire 1998 season would be a memorable one for Wood, who went 13-6 with a 3.40 ERA and was also named the National League Rookie of the Year.

The 20-strikeouts are evidence enough that Wood was dominant that day, but in case you need some more info, the Chicago Sun-Times reminds everyone that, "the Astros recorded just one hit against Wood. Every batter who came up the the plate struck out at least once."
