Published Jul. 31, 2011 9:32 p.m. ET

Tampa Bay Rays vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has had an appendectomy.

The surgery took place Saturday night at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Team spokesman Rick Vaughn on Sunday said Friedman was resting comfortably at the hospital and is expected to be released soon.

Friedman conducted business on the final day of the non-waiver trade period Sunday from his hospital room.

''We had numerous conversations with many different organizations leading up to the deadline, but none came to fruition,'' Friedman said in a statement. ''We will continue to be opportunistic in our approach after the deadline as before it.''
