Rays SS Jason Bartlett ready to begin rehab stint

Published Jun. 12, 2010 11:13 p.m. ET

Tampa Bay shortstop Jason Bartlett is close to rejoining the Rays after taking batting practice and doing some running to test his injured right hamstring at Tropicana Field.

Bartlett worked out before the Rays faced the Florida Marlins on Saturday night. He plans to begin a brief minor league rehab stint with Triple-A Durham on Monday, then expects to be activated from the 15-day disabled list and return to Tampa Bay's lineup Wednesday against Atlanta.

An All-Star a year ago, Bartlett is batting .231 with one homer and 22 RBIs in 48 games this season. He has been out since May 30 with a right hamstring strain.

Manager Joe Maddon said Bartlett will play seven innings in the field for Durham on Monday. He will be used as a designated hitter the following day.
