Rays showing interest in Qualls

Published Jul. 30, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Rays are showing serious interest in Diamondbacks reliever Chad Qualls, and a deal could be completed before the non-waiver trade deadline Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.

Qualls, who turns 32 on Aug. 17, has endured a mostly horrific season in Arizona, losing the closer’s role and going 1-4 with an 8.51 ERA.

The Rays would be buying low on Qualls, banking on him pitching better in a new environment and, perhaps, pitching into better luck.

Opponents are batting .438 against Qualls in balls in play, an average that reflects his misfortune with the D'backs; the league average generally is around .300.

If a trade is completed, Qualls will be reunited with his good friend, Rays right-hander Dan Wheeler, his former teammate with the Astros.
