Rays minor leaguer Thomas suspended for 50 games

Tampa Bay Rays catcher Mark Thomas has been suspended for 50 games without pay for a second violation for a drug of abuse under baseball's minor league program.

The 25-year-old, a 22nd-round pick from Young Harris Junior College in the 2006 amateur draft, is hitting .151 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 186 at-bats this season for Double-A Montgomery of the Southern League.

The suspension announced Tuesday was the 29th this year under the minor league program.
