LOS ANGELES (AP) Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals hit Dodgers star Yasiel Puig with a pitch in the third inning, triggering a bench-clearing scrum in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

It was 92 degrees at gametime, and things quickly got hot at Dodger Stadium on Friday.

Puig led off and was hit in the upper left arm with Los Angeles trailing 1-0. He went to take first base and teammate Adrian Gonzalez began jawing with Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.

Molina grew especially heated and soon both benches and bullpens emptied, creating a scrum at home plate. There was pushing, shoving and yelling, but no punches were thrown. Puig later gave Wainwright a friendly pat as he took his base.

Last year, Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly hit Hanley Ramirez in the ribs in the NL championship series opener, limiting the Dodgers star for the rest of the matchup. The teams traded hit by pitches earlier this season.
