BOSTON (AP) The game between Baltimore and Boston was delayed for a few minutes in the middle of the fourth inning Sunday because home plate umpire Paul Emmel left the field for an undisclosed reason.

After the final out of the top half, Emmel slowly walked to the Red Sox dugout at Fenway Park, spoke to a member of the team's medical staff and headed down the steps toward the clubhouse.

Second base umpire John Tumpane took over behind the plate. In the next inning, Tumpane ejected Boston slugger David Ortiz after he tried to check his swing and was called for a strike by third base ump Jerry Meals.

Ortiz said something to Tumpane and was tossed. Red Sox manager John Farrell came out and got in between the pair.

Daniel Nava finished Ortiz's at-bat and bounced out to third. The Orioles led 5-3 at the time.
