The Pittsburgh Pirates have added 16-year-old Mexican right-hander Luis Heredia to their system, agreeing to purchase his rights from the Veracruz Red Eagles of the Mexican Baseball League.

The 6-foot-6 Heredia was ranked by Baseball America as the top pitching prospect internationally entering the year. His fastball has been clocked in the mid-90s.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington says Thursday's deal for Heredia demonstrates the franchise's commitment to ''having a strong presence in Latin America.''
