Piniella returns to Cubs

Piniella, who is retiring after the season, said he never considered skipping the final 49 games. The Cubs had lost 13 of 15 and were 17 games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis entering Friday night's game against the Cardinals.

''Look, I've never been a quitter in my life doing anything,'' Piniella said. ''I'm coming back here and I'm going to do everything I can to help this team win games, that's all I'm interested in.''

The Cubs lost three of four while Piniella was gone, all one-run decisions. Piniella said he watched some of the games on TV, and approved of the effort.

First baseman Derrek Lee also rejoined the team after being activated from the bereavement list. Lee, who had been tending to an ailing grandfather, was in the lineup.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez (left rib cage) took batting practice. Piniella said Ramirez, who missed his third straight start, could play Saturday.

Third baseman Jeff Baker was scratched after hurting his back during an early workout. Blake DeWitt replaced him in the lineup and was batting fifth.
