Phillies lefty Cole Hamels expected to start Wednesday at Dodgers

Phillies left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels is expected to make his season debut on Wednesday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers after starting the campaign on the disabled list because of left biceps tendinitis.

Hamels made the last of three minor-league rehab starts for Class A Clearwater on Thursday, when he allowed one earned run in seven innings of work. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Hamels is expected to throw a bullpen session with the team this weekend in Denver, where the Phillies are playing the Rockies.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg told reporters before Friday’s game that starting Hamels on Wednesday would allow him to slot right-hander A.J. Burnett in between Hamels and fellow left-hander Cliff Lee.

"It's still taken some time, but he's gone about it like a spring training with normal progression of pitches," Sandberg said, according to the Daily News. "But he's built up now to no restrictions with him. So it's like a shortened version of a spring training."

Hamels is coming off a 2013 season in which he was 8-14 with a 3.56 ERA.
