Pedro Alvarez and Mark Trumbo win in salary arbitration

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Pedro Alvarez and Mark Trumbo won their salary arbitration cases Thursday, and Atlanta pitcher Mike Minor became the 12th player to go to a hearing this year.

Alvarez was awarded a $5.75 million salary instead of Pittsburgh's $5.25 million offer by Robert Herzog, James Oldham and Dan Brent, who heard arguments Wednesday.

Alvarez, 28, hit .231 with 18 homers and 56 RBIs last year, his poorest season since 2011. He has made 79 errors at third base during the last three seasons, and the Pirates plan to shift him to first.

Taken by the Pirates with the second overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft, Alvarez made $4.25 million last year. Pittsburgh beat second baseman Neil Walker in arbitration and lost to right-hander Vance Worley.

Trumbo was awarded his $6.9 million request by Howard Edelman, Margaret Brogan and Edna Francis rather than Arizona's $5.3 million offer.

A 29-year-old outfielder and first baseman, Trumbo hit .235 with 14 homers and 61 RBIs last season, down from 34 homers and 100 RBIs the previous year. He was tied for the NL lead in homers and second in RBIs when he sustained a foot stress fracture less than a month into the season. Trumbo made $4.8 million last season.

Minor asked Mark Burstein, Gil Vernon and Brent to award him $5.6 million, and the Braves argued for $5.1 million.

The 27-year-old left-hander was 6-12 with a 4.77 ERA in 25 starts last year, when he missed the first month of the season because of shoulder soreness. He made $3.85 million.

He went 13-9 with a 3.21 ERA in 2013.

Teams lead players 6-5, the most decisions since teams went 8-6 in 2001.

Baltimore outfielder Alejandro de Aza and Seattle right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen remain scheduled for hearings.
