Parra has hip issue | BREWERS NOTES Pitcher seeks second opinion /

The Milwaukee Brewers provided injury updates on several players Friday including a previously undisclosed hip problem for lefthander Manny Parra.

Parra had an MRI performed on his left hip after the season with a diagnosis of a possible torn labrum and is getting a second opinion to see if surgery is necessary. He finished the season with nine consecutive scoreless outings (132/3 innings) out of the bullpen after being removed from the starting rotation (2-7, 6.19 ERA in 16 starts).

"This is something he has had off and on for a couple of years," said assistant general manager Gord Ash. "It never got to the point where it completely disabled him, but it has been painful at times and somewhat bothersome." Third baseman Casey McGehee had successful surgery Monday on his right knee by team physician William Raasch, who removed two loose bodies. McGehee had a cleanup procedure in that knee after the 2009 season and recovered nicely, playing in 157 games and leading the club with 104 runs batted in.

"His knee is actually a whole lot better than a year ago," said Ash. "We just wanted to take the time during the off-season to clean it up. Obviously, he was able to play well with it. It was a very minor procedure." Left-hander Doug Davis had an ulnar nerve transposition and surgery to repair his left elbow flexor tendon last Saturday. Davis experienced elbow problems near the end of the season after missing several months with a virus of his heart lining.

The Brewers will pay a $1 million buyout rather than exercise a $6.25 million option on the contract of Davis, who was 1-4 with a 7.51 ERA in eight starts.

Third base prospect Mat Gamel had successful surgery to remove a sesamoid bone in his left big toe. The surgery was performed by Milwaukee specialist Richard Marks, and Gamel is expected to be full-go by spring training.

Reliever LaTroy Hawkins is making steady progress after undergoing surgery on Aug. 27 to repair fraying in his right shoulder. Hawkins, who made only 18 appearances out of the bullpen (0-3, 8.44), is undergoing physical therapy in Dallas and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Pitchers sent out: The Brewers sent right-handers Marco Estrada and Alex Periard outright to Class AAA Nashville, leaving them with 38 players on their 40-man roster.

Estrada began the year with Nashville and was promoted to Milwaukee, where he made seven appearances (one start) with a 9.53 ERA before suffering a shoulder strain and missing the remainder of the season. Periard missed time with shoulder problems but made 11 starts for Class AA Huntsville, going 2-4 with a 4.71 ERA.

Staff retained: The Brewers announced their entire Arizona development staff and roving minor-league instructors will return for the 2011 season. In addition, Matt Kerls was promoted to coordinator of video operations at the Arizona training complex.

Returning development staffers include farm director Reid Nichols, assistant and rookie-league manager Tony Diggs, rookie-league pitching coach Steve Cline and hitting coach Kenny Dominguez, Latin liaison Rolando Valles, equipment manager J.R. Rinaldi and clubhouse manager Matt Bass.

The minor-league staff includes field coordinator and catching instructor Charlie Greene, hitting coordinator Darnell Coles, pitching coordinator Lee Tunnell, infield coordinator Garth Iorg, outfield/base-running coordinator Reggie Williams, physical therapist Kenny Patterson, training coordinator Frank Neville and strength and conditioning coordinator Jeff Mester.
