Padres' Ross struggles in return to Arizona

This trip to Arizona didn't go so well for Tyson Ross.

The right-hander surrendered a pair of two-run innings that sent the San Diego Padres to a 6-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday night.

Will Venable singled and scored in the first, but that was it for San Diego, which managed just five hits.

Ross (3-7) was charged with six runs, four earned, and seven hits in six-plus innings. He struck out six and walked two while falling to 0-2 with a 4.19 ERA in his last three starts for the Padres.

It was quite a different result from his last game at Chase Field, when he pitched eight innings of three-hit ball in a 1-0 victory over All-Star Patrick Corbin and the Diamondbacks on July 28.

''In the last time, I was able to get the first guy out,'' he said. ''This time, I was pitching in jams. It is definitely a different game when you get that first guy on base. You can hit and run, they can steal. It's things like that which kill you.''

Arizona right-hander Brandon McCarthy (3-8) allowed an unearned run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked none in his first victory since May 24 against San Diego.

''I felt I carried my weight and nice to see a positive result,'' said McCarthy, who had lost each of his last five starts. ''I never felt that strong this season and went back to watch video from before I went on the disabled list last season. I saw some mechanical issues, made a few adjustments, and satisfied with the results.''

Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs for Arizona, which finished with eight hits. He leads the NL with 103 RBIs for the franchise's best total since Luis Gonzalez drove in 104 in 2003.

Despite taking the loss, manager Bud Black indicated Ross turned in a creditable performance.

''I thought (Ross) threw the ball well,'' Black said. ''I thought his stuff was good, his mix of pitches, fastball, curve, slider, was all there. They put the bat on the ball, hit some grounders through some holes. But, overall, he threw well.''

After McCarthy left, Eury De La Rosa threw two perfect innings.

Martin Prado had three RBIs for Arizona. He is batting .365 (38 for 104) with four homers and 27 RBIs in his last 23 games.

Prado saw a different Ross than the one from the July shutout.

''Last time, he had a nasty breaking pitch and hard slider,'' he said. ''This time, he elevated his pitches and we took advantage.''

Prado had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded in the sixth, Prado's grounder to third was booted by Chase Headley, allowing two more runs to score.

NOTES: Former Arizona right-hander Ian Kennedy faces his former teammates for the first time Tuesday night. In his four starts with San Diego, Kennedy is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA. After the game, Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said rookie left-hander David Holmberg would start for the Diamondbacks. ... Padres' Reymond Fuentes made his major league debut, hit seventh, played center field and went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. ... Attendance was 16,871, the smallest crowd of the season in Chase Field.
